Diceless RPGs
A diceless roleplaying game is one in which, as the name implies, dice are not used. By doing this, the element of ‘random chance’ is avoided, as is the rolling of dice which ultimately slows down gameplay and allows the players to focus on roleplaying leaving any conflicts up to the Storyteller to arbitrate.
Notable Diceless Games
There are, of course, many diceless roleplaying games but some of the more notable are:
- Amber Diceless Roleplaying Game
- Lord of Gossamer and Shadow also inspired by Amber Diceless. (the late Steve Russel, publisher, kindly donated a number of copies of the rule book to us for the 2015 AmberConNI! We miss him dearly.)
- Lords of Olympus is inspired by Amber Diceless, but focused on Greek Mythology.
- Nobilis
- Marvel Universe Roleplaying Game
- Active Exploits
- Everway
- Theatrix
- Troika Moira
There are also a number of others which can be played without dice:
And still some that use playing cards to decide outcomes (far be it from me to argue this not being diceless!):
- Castle Falkenstein
- DramaSystem and Hillfolk (they use cards, but only as a ‘bridge‘)
